The House of Representatives has approved another extension of the capital component of the 2025 budget, moving the implementation deadline from September 30, 2026 to December 31, 2026.

The decision was taken during Tuesday’s plenary after lawmakers considered an amendment bill sponsored by House Leader Julius Ihonvbere. The extension gives ministries, departments and agencies more time to continue capital projects and other expenditure already captured in the 2025 Appropriation Act.

It is the fourth extension of the 2025 capital budget timeline. The original December 31, 2025 deadline was first shifted to March 31, 2026, then to June 30 and later to September 30 before the latest move.

Premium Times reported that Ihonvbere told the House that the capital component had not been fully implemented because of economic difficulties. Daily Post reported that the request for more time came from President Bola Tinubu to the National Assembly.

The bill passed accelerated readings before the House approved it. The extension came a day before the September 30 deadline was due to lapse.
