The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the dismissal of three senior police officers and the demotion of 16 others over misconduct, it announced on Wednesday.
Commission spokesperson Torty Kalu said the decisions followed a plenary meeting at the PSC headquarters in Abuja, chaired by retired deputy inspector-general of police Hashimu Argungu.
The disciplinary decisions also included severe reprimands for 21 officers and ordinary reprimands for two. Three officers were cleared, while some who had been suspended were reinstated into the Nigeria Police Force.
The commission said the dismissals followed established cases of serious misconduct and conduct unbecoming of police officers.
Argungu said the commission would continue to deal promptly with disciplinary cases and appeals. He reiterated its position against corruption, human rights abuses and interference in land and civil disputes.
The announcement did not identify the officers dismissed or demoted, or give details of the individual cases against them.
