Police Restrict Movement Across Edo For Local Government Elections

The Edo State Police Command has announced a statewide movement restriction for Saturday’s local government elections.

The restriction starts at midnight and is meant to allow security agencies to protect voters, election officials and sensitive materials across the state’s 18 local government areas. Reports differed on the end time, with Daily Post giving 3 p.m. and Premium Times and Channels TV reporting 6 p.m.

The command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said officials of the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission, accredited observers, accredited journalists, security agencies, emergency workers and other essential service providers on election duty would be exempted.

The police said the measure was agreed with other security agencies and would be enforced across the state. Residents were advised to comply with the order and avoid any action that could disrupt the election.

Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika said security arrangements had been made for the poll and urged eligible voters to conduct themselves peacefully while voting under EDSIEC guidelines.
