Police charge five men over Tinubu Must Go T-shirts in Borno
Police in Borno State have charged five men to court after they were arrested for allegedly wearing T-shirts carrying the words “Tinubu Must Go”.
Premium Times named the men as Baba Aji Gremami, Mustapha Abba Yemen, Abacha Mohammed Ali, Adam Umar Gubio and Abdulhamid Mohammed. The report said the charges accused them of criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, disturbing public peace and thuggery.
The charges alleged that the men printed the T-shirts with intent to breach public peace around the West End Roundabout community in Maiduguri. Premium Times reported that the alleged offences were brought under sections of the Borno State Penal Code Law.
Daily Post reported that the Borno State chapter of the African Democratic Congress condemned the arrests and called for the men’s release. The party said wearing a T-shirt with a political message should be treated as an expression of opinion, not a criminal act.
Premium Times also reported that Amnesty International criticised the detention and urged the authorities to release the men and drop the charges. The police and Borno authorities had not issued a fresh response in the two reports.
