Osun Government Warns Against Fresh Post-Election Violence

Osun State Government has warned political actors and other groups against fresh violence after the governorship election, saying the state needs calm and reconciliation instead of another round of attacks.

The warning followed reports of post-election disruptions in some communities, including allegations that opposition members had been attacked in some towns after the poll.

Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment Kolapo Alimi said in a Sunday statement that the state would not condone violence from any group. He said Osun needed to heal from the tension recorded before the election and restore peaceful coexistence across communities.

The government also raised concern over alleged plans to trigger fresh crises in local government councils and motor parks. It urged residents, political actors and security agencies to help prevent a return to violence.

According to the statement, President Bola Tinubu and Governor Ademola Adeleke had engaged on a peaceful way forward after the election. The government also asked security agencies to enforce the rule of law, including on political detainees and disputes around local government and motor park control.

The development comes after earlier election-period reports of arrests, violence and disputes around the Osun governorship poll. The new warning focuses on the immediate post-election period and the state’s effort to stop further escalation.
