A man identified in reports as Ayegbo or Dele Oluwadele has been killed in Esa Oke, Osun State, days before the governorship election, in an attack that has raised fresh concern about political violence in the state.

The victim was described as a nephew of Busayo Oluwole Oke, the Director-General of the APC Campaign Council and a member of the House of Representatives. Another APC supporter, named by Daily Trust as Taiwo Oluwadele, was also shot and was said to be in critical condition.

The shooting was reported around the Oluwole Oka family compound in Esa Oke. Punch reported that sources in the town said the attack happened late on Wednesday, between about 11 p.m. and midnight, and that the assailants were travelling in a black SUV.

Osun police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi confirmed the killing to Daily Trust but did not give details on the circumstances. The APC campaign spokesperson, Oluremi Omowaye, blamed rival political interests for attacks on APC supporters, while the report did not include a police finding naming the attackers.

In Punch’s account, Sunday Omolebi, a media adviser to Oke, said the victim was shot from a moving black Jeep and described the killing as an attempt to weaken Oke in his political base.

Police confirmation so far covers the death, while claims about the political motive remain allegations from party-linked sources.
