The Northern Senators Forum has called for an investigation into the October 23 attack on Binari community in Taraba State and the establishment of a security base to help protect residents.

The lawmakers want security agencies to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible, alongside stronger patrols in Karim-Lamido Local Government Area and communities along the River Benue corridor.

The forum’s chairman, Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua, made the demands in a condolence message issued on Monday. He expressed sympathy with the Taraba State Government, residents and bereaved families.

The forum urged the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to strengthen operations in the area. Its proposals include a forward operating base, a local base for security operations, and intelligence-led patrols along the Kompany-Asusar route.

The reported death toll has varied. Punch put it at at least 26, while police initially confirmed 10 deaths and community accounts cited by Channels Television and Vanguard gave higher totals.

The state had delivered relief materials after the attack, with casualty accounts differing. The attack took place shortly after Friday prayers; accounts of the victims included worshippers, vigilantes, women and children.

The senators also called on the National Emergency Management Agency and other Nigerians to provide humanitarian assistance to residents and families affected by the violence.
