NiMet weather forecast - thunderstorms and flooding

NiMet has issued a weather advisory warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and potential flooding across multiple states as the rainy season picks up.

According to the forecast shared on NiMet’s official X handle, northern states including Taraba, Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kaduna may see light thunderstorms in the morning, with heavier rainfall developing by afternoon and evening.

Borno, Jigawa, Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Katsina, and Kano are also in the path of afternoon and evening storms. NiMet warned that lightning and strong winds could affect outdoor activities and travel.

In the North Central region, Niger and Benue are likely to see morning thunderstorms with more widespread activity later. Low-lying communities could face localised flooding as rainfall intensifies.

Southern states including Lagos, Ebonyi, Enugu, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River will start the day under cloudy skies with early thunderstorms, giving way to more widespread rain through the afternoon.

NiMet advised residents to secure loose objects, avoid outdoor activities during storms, and drive carefully during poor visibility. Airlines were told to obtain airport-specific weather reports before flights.
