Flooding around Kukareta in Damaturu Local Government Area of Yobe State has displaced 1,020 people from 143 households, according to a rapid assessment by the state emergency agency.

The assessment recorded 278 shelters affected after heavy rainfall. No deaths or injuries were recorded, and no public building was damaged, Daily Post reported on Monday.

The report was prepared by the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency, local government officials and community representatives. It was signed by SEMA’s Director of Search and Rescue Operations, Dr Mohammed Ibrahim Jalo.

Kokari internally displaced persons camp accounted for 48 affected households and 232 people, with 63 shelters affected. The agency identified the camp as the worst affected location.

Lawanti Gana recorded 249 affected residents and 68 damaged shelters, while Bulama Gremari recorded 149 residents and 41 shelters. The assessment also listed Fulatari, Tsohuwar Kasuwa and Bulama Adam among the affected communities.

Jalo said SEMA was working with government agencies and partners to provide immediate assistance, giving priority to the camp and the most vulnerable families.

The agency advised residents to remain alert for further rainfall and move to higher ground if water levels rise. It warned against entering flooded areas or contaminated waterways and urged families to boil or treat drinking water.

Residents were also asked to report further damage, missing persons or urgent needs to SEMA, the local government emergency desk or nearby officials, and to cooperate with assessment and relief teams.
