Rescuers were searching on Monday for a man and a teenage girl swept away by floodwater in Aba, Abia State, after he tried to pull her from an open drain.
The incident happened during a downpour on Sunday evening at Ukwu Mango on Faulks Road. The man reportedly slipped into the drain while attempting to rescue the girl, and the water carried both of them away.
Residents began searching on Sunday but had not found either person by the time the reports were filed on Monday. Abia State Fire Service personnel and other government officials then joined the search, combing drainage channels.
Police officers arrived on Monday morning to control the crowd as the operation continued. Residents feared that the pair could have been carried into the Aba River, but their whereabouts and fate remained unconfirmed when Daily Post and Vanguard filed their accounts.
Abia police spokesperson Maureen Chinaka promised to respond when contacted by journalists. Vanguard reported that her response had not arrived when it filed its account.
