NAMDA Says 14 Branches Back Three-Day Warning Strike

The Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics says most of its branches have backed a three-day warning strike across medical schools from Tuesday, September 1, 2026.

The association said 14 of its 17 branches voted for the action after a National Emergency Council meeting. It said the strike would be nationwide and would affect medical schools if the Federal Government does not address its demands.

NAMDA’s acting secretary-general, Prof. Aniekan Peter, said medical lecturers were frustrated by unresolved welfare and pay issues at a time when universities are already losing staff to migration. The group said government plans to train more doctors would be difficult to achieve if the lecturers who train them are left without settled conditions of service.

The decision follows an earlier ultimatum reported here, when the association gave the government until August 31 to resolve the same set of demands.

The demands listed by the association include the conclusion of negotiations on conditions of service, formal documentation of medical lecturers under the CONMESS salary structure, payment of medical clinical academic training allowance, earned academic allowance, excess workload allowance and arrears from 2014 to 2019.

NAMDA also complained about what it called discriminatory treatment of medically qualified lecturers and consultants under the Nigerian Universities Pension Management Company. It said branches that joined the decision include University of Uyo, University of Calabar, University of Benin, University of Ilorin, LAUTECH, FUHSI Ila-Orangun, FUHSO Otukpo, FUHSA Azare, University of Jos and Bayero University Kano.

The warning strike adds to pressure in the public university and health training system, where staff shortages and pay disputes have repeatedly disrupted academic calendars and medical education.
