Malawi Stun Super Falcons 3-2 In WAFCON Opener
Malawi handed Nigeria’s Super Falcons a 3-2 defeat in their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations opener at Al Madina Stadium in Rabat.
The result ended Nigeria’s unbeaten record against debutant teams at the tournament. Daily Post reported that the Super Falcons had faced WAFCON debutants 17 times before Tuesday’s match, winning 16 and drawing one.
Channels TV reported that Nigeria dominated possession but fell behind in the second half. Temwa Chawinga scored in the 69th minute, Tabitha Chawinga added Malawi’s second, and Temwa struck again deep into stoppage time.
Rasheedat Ajibade scored from the penalty spot in the 91st minute before Uchenna Kanu added another late goal, but Nigeria could not complete the comeback. The Super Falcons now have to respond quickly, with a match against Zambia next on Saturday.
