Lagos residents, employers and workers have until 31 December to obtain health insurance before enforcement of mandatory coverage begins on 1 January 2027, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced.
Sanwo-Olu announced the timetable at the launch of the Lagos Private Health Plans on Tuesday. His Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, issued a statement on the policy.
The private plans are intended for salaried workers and corporate organisations. They complement Ilera Eko, which serves vulnerable residents and people working in the informal sector.
The policy operates under Executive Order EO/BOS/01 of 2024, which assigns responsibilities to individuals, employers and the government. Sanwo-Olu said employers should treat workers’ healthcare as an employment obligation.
The governor said 21 health maintenance organisations had endorsed participation in the plans. An implementation steering committee and an enforcement task force would coordinate the rollout.
Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA) Chairman Adebayo Adedewe said the state had increased its Health Equity Fund from N1 billion to N3 billion to cover more than 500,000 vulnerable residents unable to afford premiums.
The government said it would monitor hospital payments, claims settlement and the care provided under the plans, with quarterly monitoring results to be published.
