Lagos Govt Accuses Influencers Of Sharing False Flood Images

The Lagos State Government has accused some social media users and influencers of spreading misleading flood images, saying pictures from outside the state were being presented as recent flooding in Lagos.

The warning adds a misinformation angle to the wider flooding debate in the state, after the government had earlier cautioned against politicising flood incidents reported here.

Environment and Water Resources Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab said the government had noticed attempts to push a false narrative by circulating images from other states and countries as if they were Lagos scenes.

He said inaccurate visuals make it harder to respond to genuine complaints from residents and property owners who need urgent intervention.

According to Punch and Premium Times, Wahab made the remarks in a post on X on Sunday, urging bloggers, influencers and residents to verify information before sharing it.

He said the government continues to monitor complaints through different channels, but warned that deliberate misinformation can mislead the public and undermine work on real environmental challenges.

Wahab also cited an X user accused of sharing an Accra flood photograph while presenting it as a Lagos incident.

He said freedom of expression should be exercised responsibly and within the law, adding that public discussion of flooding should be guided by accuracy, civility and the collective interest of Lagos residents.
