Labour Party disowns Arabambi over Obi credential case

The Labour Party has distanced itself from Abayomi Arabambi after he filed court cases seeking access to records linked to Peter Obi’s academic and service credentials.

The party said Arabambi, its former national publicity secretary, had ceased to be a member after a National Executive Council suspension in March was ratified by its national convention on April 28, 2026. It said he could not bring any case as a Labour Party member or representative.

The clarification followed reports that Arabambi had sued the West African Examinations Council, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and the National Youth Service Corps under the Freedom of Information Act. The cases seek orders compelling the institutions to release official records relating to certificates said to have been issued to Obi.

Labour Party spokesman Ken Asogwa said the party would not comment on the substance of the case, adding that Obi is also no longer a member of the party. He said no party organ had reversed the decision affecting Arabambi and other suspended members.

The party also warned that any claim by Arabambi to be speaking as its chieftain or representative was unauthorised. It said its lawyers were reviewing the matter and could petition law enforcement authorities.

Punch reported that the National Democratic Congress had earlier defended Obi’s credentials and challenged Arabambi to produce evidence questioning them. Arabambi, according to that report, said he was seeking access to existing institutional records and was not asking the court to decide whether the certificates submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission were genuine or forged.
