Police probe disruption of PDP, NDC meetings by gunmen in Enugu

Police in Enugu State have opened an investigation after armed men reportedly disrupted opposition political meetings in Nkanu West Local Government Area.

The incidents involved a Nigeria Democratic Congress ward meeting in Ndiuno-Obuoffia Community and a Peoples Democratic Party rally at St. Joseph Primary School, Agbani. Premium Times reported that two people were injured in the first attack, while chairs and canopies were destroyed at the PDP venue.

Enugu police spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe said Commissioner of Police Bitrus Giwa ordered investigators to identify those behind the attacks. The police said officers were deployed after reports reached the command, although the organisers had not given prior notice for security cover.

Vanguard separately reported the NDC’s condemnation of the attack on its members in Obuoffia Ward. The party said opposition members had a right to peaceful political activity and asked security agencies to act against political violence.

The police command appealed to political groups to notify security agencies ahead of rallies and public meetings so officers can plan protection and reduce the risk of further attacks.
