Obafemi Hamzat Lagos Deputy Governor

Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat has started political consultations with the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the powerful inner caucus that has shaped politics in Nigeria’s commercial capital for decades.

Hamzat disclosed the meeting on his X account on Monday. “I had thoughtful conversations about the future of Lagos and the kind of leadership it requires. I value the experience and guidance shared. This is about listening, learning and working with others to build a stronger Lagos,” he wrote.

The GAC, led by Tajudeen Olusi, consists of about 30 veteran politicians and key stakeholders, including President Tinubu and Senator Oluremi Tinubu. It heavily influences candidate selection long before formal primaries are held.

Punch exclusively reported on March 24 that Hamzat may emerge as the APC consensus candidate for 2027. Vanguard reports that Tinubu recently directed the GAC leadership to work for Hamzat to succeed Sanwo-Olu, though the council has not reached a formal consensus. GAC member Muraina Taiwo told reporters: “The name Hamzat being mentioned is possible, but the GAC has not reached a consensus on a candidate.”

Online commentary has already taken off, with some unverified accounts claiming that GAC member Otunba Alebiosu was moved to tears after Hamzat secured the council’s backing. These claims remain unconfirmed.

The contest is getting crowded. Akinwunmi Ambode, Lagos governor from 2015 to 2019, is also seen as a contender. The Justice Forum, a political group in Lagos, has endorsed Hamzat. Lawmaker James Faleke, representing Ikeja Federal Constituency, also backed him, urging party loyalists to rally behind his ambition.

Meanwhile, Lagos indigenes have reportedly pushed back against both Hamzat and Ambode, demanding that the next governor come from the indigenous community rather than the political establishment, according to The Whistler.
