Genevieve Nnaji Joins BBC Drama ‘Wahala’ — Filming Has Begun
Genevieve Nnaji is returning to the screen, and this time she is heading to the BBC.
The iconic Nollywood actress has been announced as part of the cast of Wahala, a six-part drama thriller produced by Firebird Pictures for BBC iPlayer and BBC One. The BBC confirmed that filming has begun on the series, which is adapted from Nikki May’s debut novel of the same name by BAFTA-nominated writer Theresa Ikoko.
Nnaji joins a female-led cast that includes Adelayo Adedayo, Cush Jumbo, Susan Wokoma and Deborah Ayorinde. The four leads play Simi, Boo, Ronke and Isobel — four Nigerian-British women in their thirties whose friendships, secrets and pasts collide in a story that moves between present-day London and their childhood homes.
What Is Wahala About?
“Wahala” is a Nigerian word for trouble, and the drama leans into that fully. According to the BBC, the show is “a gripping and surprising six-part thriller” that follows the four women navigating careers, love and family in London while confronting dark secrets from their past.
Adedayo, Jumbo and Wokoma play Simi, Boo and Ronke — best friends whose tightly balanced world begins to crack when Isobel, played by Ayorinde, enters the picture. Isobel is described as “charismatic and super-wealthy,” and her arrival sets off a chain of events involving fractured loyalties, buried truths and consequences none of them can walk back from.
Genevieve Nnaji’s specific character has not been named publicly, but her presence in the series carries weight beyond the role itself. One of Nollywood’s most celebrated actresses, Nnaji has maintained a relatively low profile in recent years following the release of Lionheart, her directorial debut that streamed on Netflix in 2019.
“I’m very happy to be joining Wahala and to be working with such a brilliant team. It’s an intriguing story and I’m excited to be a part of it,” Nnaji said in a statement released by the BBC.
A Star-Studded Production
The rest of the cast is no less impressive. Adelayo Adedayo has built a strong reputation through shows like The Responder and Supacell. Cush Jumbo, known for Criminal Record and The Good Wife, brings considerable screen authority to the production. Susan Wokoma, whose credits include Cheaters and Enola Holmes, plays Ronke.
Deborah Ayorinde, who appeared in Them and Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue, takes on Isobel — the disruptive outsider at the centre of the drama’s tension.
Theresa Ikoko, who adapted the scripts, is BAFTA-nominated and best known for the acclaimed film Rocks. She is also one of the series’ directors, alongside Leonora Lonsdale and Remi Weekes. The producer is Ado Yoshizaki Cassuto, with executive producers including Nawfal Faizullah for the BBC and Elizabeth Kilgarriff and Craig Holleworth for Firebird Pictures. BBC Studios handles global sales.
Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, called Ikoko’s scripts “riveting, full of rich and complex characters, and everything you’d want from Nikki May’s exquisite book brought vividly to life on screen.” Elizabeth Kilgarriff added that the casting was something the production was “so proud” to announce.
Why This Matters
Nigerian-British stories rarely get this kind of platform on mainstream British television — and this one is being treated as a proper prestige drama, not a side project. With a high-calibre cast, a respected writer, and the BBC’s full backing, Wahala has real potential to cross over to Nigerian and diaspora audiences who want to see their worlds handled with care on screen.
No air date has been announced yet, but the production is now officially underway.
