Nollywood is mourning veteran Yoruba actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, after reports of his death on Sunday following a battle with cancer.

The actor’s daughter, Kira Taiwo, announced his death during a live session on Instagram, according to reports that also said the family had recently appealed for medical support after he was diagnosed with stage four cancer.

Punch reported that filmmaker and Best of Nollywood founder Seun Oloketuyi also announced the death, while actor Saheed Balogun paid tribute to Hassan. Vanguard reported that the family had received many offers of medical and spiritual help after the daughters appealed publicly for support.

Daily Post said efforts were made to secure treatment for the actor before his death, including financial assistance reportedly offered by Ogun politician Adeola Olamilekan, also known as Yayi.

Hassan was widely known for his work in Yoruba-language films and for a screen career that made him one of the familiar faces of Nigeria’s film industry. Reports differed on his exact age: Daily Post put it at 65, while Vanguard put it at 66.
