FG Unveils Digital Address System to Boost Security and E-Commerce

The Federal Government has announced plans to roll out a national digital alphanumeric postcode system to improve security, emergency response, fraud prevention and e-commerce operations.

Daily Trust reported that the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, said the lack of accurate addresses has slowed investigations, identity checks and emergency response in many parts of the country.

Vanguard reported that Tijani spoke at a national workshop in Abuja, where he described the system as core infrastructure for the digital economy.

The minister said accurate location data can help security agencies respond faster to threats, support intelligence work and improve the ability to link people and businesses to physical locations.

He also said the system would reduce delivery costs and make online commerce more reliable by helping logistics operators identify destinations more precisely.

The postcode project is expected to support government services, private delivery networks, emergency-response planning and fraud-control systems that depend on verified physical addresses.

Tijani framed the initiative as more than an administrative update, saying it is part of the foundation needed for a modern digital public infrastructure system.

The rollout will now be watched for implementation details, including how the government plans to assign codes, protect citizens’ data and bring states, local governments and private operators into the system.

If executed well, the project could also help small businesses, delivery firms and public agencies reduce the cost and uncertainty that come with unclear street addresses.

The next test will be whether the system reaches rural communities as well as major cities and whether agencies can use it without creating fresh privacy concerns.
