NIMC rejects viral claims of NIN database breach

The National Identity Management Commission has rejected a viral claim that Nigeria’s National Identification Number database was breached.

The agency said the video being circulated online was based on a recycled 2024 report that it had already denied, and insisted that the National Identity Database had not been breached or compromised.

NIMC said it maintains multi-layered security systems to protect the personal data of registered citizens and legal residents. It warned that unverified claims about the database could mislead the public and cause unnecessary panic.

The commission urged Nigerians to rely on its official channels for information about the national identity system.

The denial comes at a time of wider public concern over personal-data safety and digital identity services. For many Nigerians, the NIN is now tied to SIM registration, banking checks and several public services, which makes any claim of a breach sensitive.
