The Federal Government is considering arrangements that would allow journalists to accompany military units during selected operations, in a bid to improve the accuracy of security reporting and public understanding of frontline realities.

Defence Minister Christopher Musa disclosed the plan on Thursday at the National Security Summit organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Abuja. He was represented at the event by his special adviser, Rear Admiral Olusanya Bankole.

According to reports by Punch, TheCable and Daily Post, Musa said the ministry is exploring ways to embed journalists with military units during operations so reporters can gain a deeper understanding of operational realities.

The minister said the media had become a critical partner in national security management because modern conflict is shaped not only by battlefield outcomes but also by information, narratives and public trust.

He said stronger cooperation between journalists and security agencies could help reduce misinformation and give citizens a clearer picture of counterinsurgency and internal security operations.

Musa, however, also warned that premature release of sensitive operational information could endanger personnel, compromise missions and assist criminal networks. That caution means any embedding arrangement would likely require agreed rules on timing, access and what can be reported.

The proposal comes as Nigeria continues to face insurgency, banditry and other security threats across several regions, with security agencies often criticised for limited access to operational areas.
