FG Begins Fresh Trial of Over 400 Terrorism Suspects in Abuja
The Federal Government has begun a fresh round of mass trials involving more than 400 suspected terrorists at the Federal High Court complex in Abuja.
Reports said the suspects are being arraigned before different judges as part of a one-week trial schedule. The cases are linked to alleged terrorism offences, aiding and abetting insurgency, and terrorism financing.
The prosecution is being led by the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi. The Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo, is also part of the government’s legal team.
The Legal Aid Council is expected to provide defence support for indigent suspects, a key part of the process because of the number of defendants involved and the seriousness of the charges.
Punch listed several Federal High Court judges involved in the proceedings, including Justices Binta Nyako, Emeka Nwite, Musa Liman, James Omotosho, Obiora Egwuatu and Ekerete Akpan.
NTA also reported the arraignment and linked it to the government’s broader terrorism prosecution programme. Similar proceedings earlier in the year reportedly produced hundreds of convictions, along with some discharges and acquittals.
The fresh trial round comes as security agencies continue to face pressure to move long-held terrorism cases from investigation and detention into formal court proceedings. It also renews public interest in how quickly terrorism prosecutions can be concluded while still protecting the rights of defendants and victims. The scale of the arraignment means the proceedings will be watched by security families, human rights lawyers and communities affected by insurgency.
