FG Auctions Forfeited Drug Kingpins’ Properties for ₦6.15bn

The Federal Government has auctioned four properties forfeited by convicted drug traffickers for a total of about ₦6.15 billion, according to reports from Daily Trust and PM News.

The assets were recovered through the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and sold after court orders transferred them to the government.

Daily Trust reported that the most valuable asset was a six-floor hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos, which attracted a winning bid of about ₦5.9 billion.

Other assets included a property in Lekki Phase 1, a block of flats in Ejigbo and another property linked to the recovered portfolio, with bidders emerging after a public auction process.

PM News reported that eight assets were initially listed for bidding, but only five attracted successful bids above their reserve prices while three did not meet the required valuation benchmark.

NDLEA Chairman Mohamed Buba Marwa, represented at the event by the agency’s secretary, Shadrach Haruna, said the auction was part of efforts to strip traffickers of the proceeds of crime.

The agency said asset recovery is meant to weaken criminal networks by ensuring that profits from drug trafficking are not retained by convicted offenders or their associates.

The sale adds a financial-recovery dimension to Nigeria’s anti-drug campaign, turning forfeited assets into public revenue while reinforcing the message that drug convictions can carry economic consequences.

The agency says such disposals also show that enforcement is not limited to seizures and arrests, but extends to recovering value from assets already forfeited through the courts.

Officials will also be judged by how transparently the proceeds are handled and whether future auctions maintain public confidence in the recovery process.
