Financing talks for a planned rail link between the Lagos Red Line and Murtala Muhammed International Airport are at an advanced stage, according to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.

FAAN Managing Director Olubunmi Onabanjo-Kuku said the proposed connection would serve the airport’s three terminals and cargo facilities, with five stops within the airport. The project remains a plan; her remarks did not announce completed financing or the start of rail operations.

Speaking at the World Aviation Festival in Lisbon, Portugal, Kuku said work was continuing on the project’s financing structure. Channels Television reported her comments on Sunday.

The proposal involves collaboration between the federal and Lagos State governments and forms part of the wider modernisation of the Lagos airport.

The Federal Government’s earlier proposal for the airport connection was reported here.

Kuku said the overhaul of Terminal 1 would improve its layout rather than expand the building. Work would cover immigration and customs areas, service counters and technology intended to improve passenger processing.

She also said FAAN was prioritising airside infrastructure and rehabilitation at major airports, including runway work and improved airfield lighting.
