Edo Assembly Speaker Agbebaku Resigns As Lawmakers Change House Leadership

Edo State House of Assembly Speaker Blessing Agbebaku resigned on Monday as pressure mounted inside the chamber over moves to remove him.

The change immediately shifted control of the House leadership. Yekini Idaiye, who represents Akoko-Edo I Constituency, was named as the new Speaker, while other principal officers were also replaced during a brief sitting.

Punch and Vanguard both reported that Agbebaku stepped down amid impeachment moves. Punch said his media aide, Ivy Adodo-Ebojele, confirmed the resignation on Facebook and said further details would be made public later.

Daily Post reported that the plenary lasted less than 30 minutes and that Jonathan Ibhamawu of Esan West was removed as Majority Leader. He was replaced by Ojiezele Osezua Sunday, who represents Esan South-East Constituency.

The shake-up leaves the Edo legislature with a new leadership line-up and adds another layer of uncertainty to state politics.
