Davido has found himself in another social media storm — this time for tossing wads of cash at cheering fans while cruising through Osun State in a luxury convoy on Tuesday.

What Happened

The Afrobeats star was visiting Osun State — where his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, currently runs the government — when the incident happened. Footage quickly spread online showing fans scrambling to grab money thrown from one of the moving vehicles in his convoy. The scenes were chaotic, joyful for some, and alarming for others.

The Backlash

Media personality Daniel Regha was among the first to go in. In a social media post, Regha called the act “foolish” and performative, arguing it served no genuine purpose. “Spraying money like that doesn’t solve any problems,” Regha wrote. “A few people might go home with a couple of thousand naira, but what does that really change?”

His argument was simple: if Davido genuinely wanted to help, he should invest in local communities, support small businesses, or fund sustainable initiatives — not stage a spectacle that benefits a handful of people and creates disorder in the streets.

The Defence

Davido’s fans pushed back hard. Money spraying has deep roots in Nigerian and Yoruba celebration culture — it is a form of communal joy, an act of sharing prosperity with the people around you. Many fans argued that calling it irresponsible misses the cultural point entirely. “Nigerians always complain, whether the celebrities do nothing or do something,” one fan wrote.

Davido himself has not publicly responded to the criticism. Given his track record — he has done this before, including on the streets of Lagos — it’s unlikely to change his habits. But the debate it has sparked, in a country where millions are struggling to afford food, is not going away quietly.
