Three people died and four were injured when a two-storey shopping complex under construction collapsed in Owode-Ede, Osun State, late on Friday.

Federal Fire Service state commandant Femi Isaac confirmed the deaths and injuries in a telephone interview with Punch on Saturday.

He said five people were rescued alive and taken to a private hospital in Ede. Four suffered serious injuries, while one escaped unhurt.

The workers were tiling apprentices who had stayed overnight at the construction site ahead of work the following morning, Isaac said. Their supervisor was not there when the structure collapsed.

Isaac said firefighters responded after receiving a distress call from the divisional police officer of A Division at about 11pm. Police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps personnel also took part in the rescue.

A resident interviewed by Punch said emergency teams worked into the early hours of Saturday. The cause of the collapse has not been established.
