Customs Says Vehicle Import Tariffs Cut To 5% For Used Cars, 10% For New Ones
The Nigeria Customs Service says the federal government has cut import tariffs on used vehicles to five per cent and on brand-new vehicles to 10 per cent under the 2026 fiscal policy measures.
Comptroller-General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi disclosed the new rates while defending the Service’s 2026 budget proposal before lawmakers.
The change lowers the tariff on used vehicles from 15 per cent to five per cent, while the rate for new vehicles drops from 20 per cent to 10 per cent.
Adeniyi said the broader fiscal measures were expected to support revenue collection, but he warned that the specific reduction on vehicle tariffs and levies could reduce customs revenue from that segment.
The announcement is separate from the Senate customs revenue target approved earlier this week. That target set an N11.074 trillion revenue projection for the Service in 2026.
Lawmakers also questioned whether the lower rates would be enough to discourage importers from routing vehicles through neighbouring countries.
