NAFDAC says it has destroyed counterfeit and unwholesome products valued at N2.6 billion in Rivers State, including pharmaceuticals, chemicals and food items seized at Onne Port.

The exercise took place on Friday, October 16, at a dumpsite in Eneka, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area. The products had been intercepted by the Nigeria Customs Service between 2025 and 2026.

Tomato paste and biscuits were among the items destroyed, Channels Television reported. The agency presented the exercise as part of a nationwide operation in which goods valued at more than N5.3 billion were seized and destroyed within a week.

Martins Iluyomade, NAFDAC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, represented Director-General Mojisola Adeyeye at the exercise. He said it was a first phase, with more seized goods still expected to be brought out of the port for destruction.

Iluyomade urged Customs to facilitate the release of the remaining containers for destruction. He also called for cooperation between enforcement agencies rather than inter-agency rivalry.

The agency’s South-South zonal director, Chukwuma Oligbu, was represented by his deputy, Rita Chukwuma. Customs Area II Command enforcement representative Elizabeth Abosede also attended and welcomed the collaboration, according to Channels Television.

NAFDAC urged members of the public to report suspected illegal manufacturing, repackaging and sales of counterfeit products.
