Chelle Drops Iheanacho and Arokodare From Super Eagles Unity Cup Squad
Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has finalised his squad for the Unity Cup in London, and two notable names are missing — Kelechi Iheanacho and Tolu Arokodare. Neither player made the cut despite being linked to a recall ahead of the tournament.
Iheanacho had been touted as a candidate for selection, particularly given his experience and goal-scoring record at senior level. But Chelle has gone in a different direction. Arokodare’s absence is also significant — the striker had been the subject of constant selection debate since Chelle took charge, and this latest omission makes his international future under the new coach increasingly uncertain.
What Chelle Is Building
The Unity Cup, held at The Valley stadium in London from 26 to 30 May, is Nigeria’s first organised international fixture since Chelle began rebuilding the Super Eagles after their failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The tournament features Nigeria, India, Jamaica, and Zimbabwe.
His decision to exclude both Iheanacho and Arokodare suggests he is leaning on a younger, more mobile attacking profile. The Unity Cup is also being used to trial players from the domestic NPFL scene alongside foreign-based Nigerians — a deliberate scouting exercise rather than just a prestige friendly.
The Stakes for Those Left Out
For Iheanacho in particular, the omission stings. He was among the senior players who survived the transition when Chelle replaced Augustine Eguavoen. His exclusion now suggests the door may be narrowing. Arokodare, once seen as the future of Nigeria’s striking department, faces a similar reality check.
Chelle has Portugal and Poland friendlies later in the year where he plans to bring a full-strength squad — the Unity Cup is primarily a development exercise. But for players watching from the outside, the message is clear: no one is guaranteed a spot in this rebuild.
