Burna Boy vs DJ Tunez: Two DJ Associations, One Feud, and No Clear Ban
The Nigerian DJ Association has stepped in to clear the air after reports swept social media that Burna Boy’s music had been banned across the country. The whole thing started after DJ Tunez, Wizkid’s official DJ, got into a physical fight with Burna Boy at a Lagos party this week.
Videos from Obi’s House in Lagos went viral on Tuesday night showing the altercation. DJ Tunez didn’t stay quiet about it. He took to X with a string of posts breaking down what happened from his perspective.
“THIS NIGGA BURNA BOY! ALL SIGNS OF WEAKNESS!” he wrote. He claimed Burna Boy hit him from behind, then ten bouncers jumped in. “1 VS 10 AND I STOOD MY GROUND,” Tunez insisted. Eyewitness accounts online back up parts of his story. One account said Burna Boy pushed first, Tunez swung back, and then Burna Boy’s security team piled on.
Things escalated quickly after that. The Nigerian DJ Association (NDJ), a separate body from DJAN, announced a nationwide ban on Burna Boy’s music. Their Instagram statement said his songs were “temporarily out of any of our DJs’ playlists until further notice,” pending an investigation into what happened to “one of our own.” The ban was said to extend to DJs in the diaspora too.
But hold on. The Deejays Association of Nigeria, which is the more established body, has now said they never sanctioned any ban. Prince Akim Edeh, DJAN’s National President, called the reports false and misleading. “We didn’t and have no intention to place ban on Burna Boy’s music or any other artist,” he stated. DJAN also pointed out that DJ Tunez is not a registered member of their association.
So there are two DJ associations, and they’re not on the same page. One banned Burna Boy’s music, the other says no ban exists. If you’re a DJ right now, you’re probably confused about which directive to follow.
Burna Boy hasn’t made any formal statement. But videos showed him dancing to “Money Constant,” a track that features Tunez alongside Wizkid and Mavo, and lingering on the word “OGBAFIA,” Tunez’s signature catchphrase, while someone in the background yelled “Ogbafia dey for ground.” That’s mockery, plain and simple.
This didn’t come out of nowhere either. Tunez threw shade at Burna Boy on X last year over a coffee brand, and the Wizkid vs Burna Boy rivalry has been simmering for years. Wizkid himself has stayed quiet through all of this.
The dust hasn’t settled. Whether the NDJ ban holds any real weight is debatable. What’s not debatable is that this feud just became the biggest story in Nigerian music this week, and neither camp looks good coming out of it.
