Army Repels ISWAP Attack on Yobe Military Base, 50 Terrorists Killed, 2 Soldiers Martyred
Troops of Operation Hadin Kai repelled a large-scale assault by ISWAP terrorists on the Headquarters of 27 Brigade in Buni Gari, Yobe State on Thursday night, killing no fewer than 50 insurgents in a fierce overnight battle. Two soldiers were killed in the engagement.
According to the Nigerian Army, the coordinated attack was launched at approximately 2:00 a.m., targeting both the brigade headquarters and the Buni Gari checkpoint from multiple directions — western, southern, and south-western flanks — simultaneously.
The Media Information Officer of Operation Hadin Kai, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, confirmed in a statement that troops held their ground and responded with heavy firepower, preventing any breach of the military formation.
“The terrorists were met with devastating resistance and retreated in confusion, evacuating some of their killed and wounded fighters,” the statement said.
Air Support and Aftermath
The Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai provided Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance support and conducted precision airstrikes on fleeing insurgents. Fighter aircraft pursued retreating ISWAP elements along identified escape corridors towards Gashua, Azare, and Kamuya, accounting for additional casualties.
Military exploitation of the immediate area after the battle led to the recovery of 10 terrorist corpses. Intelligence reports indicated more bodies were scattered along withdrawal routes. Troops also recovered a large cache of weapons including eight AK-47 rifles, two General Purpose Machine Guns, two Rocket-Propelled Grenade tubes, RPG bombs, ammunition boxes, loaded magazines, and IED canisters.
Two Soldiers Killed, Vehicles Damaged
Despite the overall operational success, the Army confirmed two soldiers died during the encounter. Wounded troops are receiving treatment and are in stable condition. Some military platforms — including Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles and gun trucks — sustained minor damage.
Troops, supported by volunteer forces, are continuing exploitation operations in the area to track fleeing insurgents and prevent regrouping.
Attack Followed Regional Security Talks
The assault came shortly after regional security consultations involving military commanders and state authorities in the North-East — a timing that has raised questions about whether ISWAP had advance knowledge of the discussions. The military did not comment on the timing correlation.
The military high command described the failed attack as further evidence of mounting pressure on terrorist groups in the North-East. Troops, it stated, remain battle-ready and “committed to denying insurgents freedom of action across the theatre of operations.”
