Soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force have been reported killed in an attack on a military base in Mairari, Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State, with differing accounts of the casualties.

The overnight attack was reported to have taken place on Tuesday, October 13. Suspected Boko Haram or Islamic State West Africa Province fighters targeted the base, where troops and local forces fought back.

Security sources quoted by Premium Times said 15 soldiers and five CJTF members were killed. Vanguard, citing a security source, reported more than 10 soldiers and four civilians killed. Those are attributed accounts, not an official military tally.

Punch quoted the Guzamala council chairman, Umar Sheriff, as confirming the attack but saying he had no casualty statistics and that no civilian had been killed. He said the military repelled the attackers.

Local and security sources said attackers also suffered casualties. Vanguard reported that military vehicles were destroyed, citing sources familiar with the attack.

Premium Times said the military had not issued an official statement and that Operation Hadin Kai spokesperson Mohammed Goni had not responded to its enquiry.
