The All Progressives Congress has officially adopted direct primaries across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory for the 2027 general elections, killing off the consensus option that had divided the party for months.

Convention Decision

The APC announced the decision in a formal notification to party stakeholders, with the National Working Committee directing all state chapters to prepare for direct primaries. The party also announced a revised timetable: forms deadline moved to May 7, with screening scheduled for May 8 to 12.

For many APC members, the consensus model had become a source of deep anxiety — a mechanism that could be used by the presidency or state governors to handpick candidates and shut out genuine contenders before voting even started.

Pantami’s Defiant Stand

The tension over the issue was most visible in Gombe State, where former Communications Minister Isa Pantami made headlines with an unusually blunt vow. “Even if I lose my life, I will fight it,” Pantami said, referring to any attempt to impose a consensus candidate in Gombe’s governorship race.

While Pantami’s comments were directed at local APC dynamics in Gombe, they captured the broader unease within the party over who gets to decide who runs and who doesn’t.

What Changes Now

With direct primaries confirmed, APC candidates at all levels — including governorship races in states holding elections in 2027 — will be chosen by registered party members rather than delegates selected by party leadership. That’s a significant shift in how power flows within Nigeria’s ruling party, at least on paper.

Critics have pointed out that direct primaries can themselves be manipulated through voter mobilisation and cash inducements. Whether this decision actually opens the APC to broader competition or just changes the arena of influence battles remains to be seen.
