ADC Alleges APC Wants To Keep El-Rufai Detained Until After 2027 Polls
The African Democratic Congress has accused the APC-led Federal Government of keeping former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai in custody for political reasons ahead of the 2027 elections.
ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi made the allegation during an interview on Channels Television, saying the opposition party believes the government does not plan to release El-Rufai until after the polls.
Abdullahi’s comments are allegations from the ADC, not findings by a court. The Federal Government and the APC had not issued a fresh response to his remarks in the reports.
Abdullahi said the ADC was not against prosecuting anyone who had a legitimate case to answer, but argued that El-Rufai’s continued detention over bailable offences and difficult bail conditions raised political concerns.
He also linked the matter to opposition politics, saying a free El-Rufai would strengthen the opposition before 2027. The ADC spokesman said the party was worried about the former governor’s health and claimed his family had been told he needed medical observation.
El-Rufai is facing alleged financial misconduct charges filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission over his time as Kaduna State governor. Daily Post also reported that he is standing trial in a separate wire-tapping case filed by the Department of State Services.
The comments follow recent public concerns from El-Rufai’s family and opposition figures over his treatment in custody.
