Abiodun Says State Assemblies Will Back State Police Bill Together

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun says he expects all 36 State Houses of Assembly to approve the constitutional amendment bill on state police at the same time.

Abiodun spoke at an Arise Television town hall on state policing, where he said the proposal now has broad national support.

The governor, who chairs the Nigeria Governors’ Forum committee on state police creation, said governors had played a central role in shaping the bill. He also praised President Bola Tinubu for sending the executive bill to the National Assembly.

Daily Post reported that Abiodun described June 24, 2026, as an important date because it marked the transmission of the bill and its quick consideration by the Senate. Premium Times reported the same remarks and said Abiodun expects the state assemblies to move together when the bill reaches them.

The governor said earlier attempts to create state police did not succeed, but argued that the present push is different because of support from federal and state actors.

The proposal is part of the wider debate over whether Nigeria should shift more security powers to the states as the country deals with kidnapping, banditry and other violent crimes.
