Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved a ₦50,000 wage award for all Lagos State public sector workers, effective May 2026. The announcement came on Workers’ Day, May 1, as the governor acknowledged the economic pressure his workers are under and committed to offering what immediate relief the state could provide.

“We recognise that workers are dealing with rising costs of living. This ₦50,000 award is our commitment to supporting you during this difficult period,” Sanwo-Olu said at the state’s Workers’ Day celebration.

What It Covers and What It Doesn’t

The ₦50,000 is a one-off wage award for May — not a pay rise or a new minimum wage. It applies to all civil servants on the Lagos State payroll and will be paid alongside May’s salary. Lagos already pays the highest minimum wage of any state in Nigeria, and Sanwo-Olu restated that commitment at the event.

Critics and labour watchers have noted that ₦50,000 goes only so far against current inflation and fuel prices — but it is more than most state governments have offered. Several other governors are expected to face renewed pressure from their workers’ unions following the announcement.

Context

The award comes as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) demanded a ₦225,000 national minimum wage from the federal government on the same day. With NNPCL simultaneously hiking petrol prices to ₦1,320–₦1,444 per litre on Workers’ Day, Lagos’ ₦50,000 gesture lands in an environment where workers’ purchasing power has been declining sharply since fuel subsidy removal.
