The military says troops killed 48 suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters after an attack on its training school in Buni Yadi, Yobe State, overnight on Thursday.

Captain Mohammed Goni, acting media information officer for Operation Hadin Kai, gave the account in a statement reported on Friday. He said fighting at the North East Theatre Training School continued into the early morning.

One soldier was killed during the engagements, Goni said. Ground troops and aircraft took part in the counter-attack, which lasted about five hours.

He said troops recovered 42 AK-47 rifles, five PKT machine guns and four general-purpose machine guns. Other recovered items included a mortar, rifle magazines and ammunition.

Goni also reported a separate attempted assault on Bitta in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State on Thursday night. He said ground forces and air support repelled that attack.

The engagements followed earlier operations in Kukawa and the Lake Chad area. Those operations formed part of a separate military account reporting 44 suspected fighters killed.

The casualty figures are the military’s account. Goni said two soldiers injured in the latest engagements were receiving treatment.
