Zulum Orders Closure Of Bama IDP Camp, Says Gwoza Camp Will Follow

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has ordered the immediate closure of the Internally Displaced Persons camp in Bama.

Daily Trust described the Bama facility as the largest IDP camp outside Maiduguri, while Channels TV reported that the Gwoza camp would also be closed in the next few weeks.

Zulum announced the decision after visiting the Government Secondary School IDP camp in Gwoza.

The governor said the return of displaced residents was possible because relative peace had returned to many communities previously occupied by Boko Haram insurgents.

He also raised concerns about criminal activity in camps and said some people had been returning to camps mainly to receive relief materials.

Punch’s RSS summary also linked the closure to insecurity, criminal activities and fake IDPs.

The Borno government said more camps would be closed before the end of the administration, while return and resettlement would be handled through community leaders.
