Uba Sani Grants Clemency to 97 Kaduna Inmates on Democracy Day
Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has granted clemency to 97 inmates as part of activities marking Democracy Day.
The governor exercised the prerogative of mercy after recommendations from the Kaduna State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, according to Premium Times and Channels TV.
The exercise covered outright release, commutation of sentences and payment of fines for eligible convicts. The state government said the move was intended to balance justice with rehabilitation, reconciliation and reintegration.
Speaking during the official clemency ceremony at the Kaduna State Correctional Centre, Sani said society must not ignore the possibility of redemption while upholding justice.
He urged the beneficiaries to treat their freedom as both an opportunity and a responsibility, calling on them to embrace lawful conduct, show genuine repentance and contribute positively to their communities.
The governor also appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, community figures and residents of Kaduna State to help the released persons return to society without discrimination.
Sani commended the judiciary, the Nigerian Correctional Service, the Legal Aid Council, security agencies, civil society groups and other stakeholders for their roles in the initiative.
The clemency announcement adds a criminal justice and rehabilitation angle to Kaduna’s Democracy Day activities.
