Two police officers were killed when gunmen attacked Uratta Division Police Station in Aba, Abia State, in the early hours of Saturday, October 17.
Police reported three injured people, but accounts from the command differ on whether all three were officers.
Abia police spokesperson Maureen Chinaka said the attackers struck at 2:26am in the Urratta-Eziukwu area of Aba South Local Government Area, using explosives that caused a fire. Her statement, reported by Premium Times, said two senior officers died and three inspectors were injured.
Punch, however, quoted Commissioner of Police Wilfred Afolabi as saying that two officers and a civilian were injured and taken to the Abia State University Teaching Hospital in Aba. He spoke while inspecting the damage with Governor Alex Otti. Channels Television also reported three injured officers.
Chinaka said no firearms or ammunition were taken from the station. She said Afolabi led a team of tactical units to the area and that security operations and monitoring were continuing to find the attackers.
The commissioner said a Hilux van and other vehicles were burnt or damaged, according to Punch.
Otti also visited the injured people at the teaching hospital. Channels Television reported that he pledged to cover the injured officers’ medical bills.
Afolabi said no arrests had been made at the time he spoke to Punch. He urged residents to support the investigation with useful information, according to the police statement carried by Premium Times.
