Two Die As Refuse Dump Collapses On Building In Calabar

Two people have died after a refuse dump collapsed onto a building at Ikot Effanga, along Old Odukpani Road in Calabar, Cross River State.

The Cross River State Police Command said the incident happened in the early hours of Friday, August 28, 2026. Police said the collapsed refuse hit a building reportedly constructed in a valley, killing two occupants.

The victims were identified as Nfon Imé and an unidentified woman. Their bodies were recovered and taken to the mortuary.

Police spokesperson ASP Sunday Eitokpah said the command had begun assessing the circumstances around the incident and had opened an investigation. The command also urged residents to remain calm while officials establish the full facts.

Daily Post reported that the deaths came about a month after a similar landslide tragedy in Ikot Awatim community, where four children from one family died. The latest incident is likely to renew questions about unsafe building locations, erosion-prone communities and waste management around Calabar.
