One person has died and three men have been rescued after a two-storey building under construction collapsed in Fadeyi, Lagos, in the early hours of Friday, October 23.
The collapse occurred on Akinola Street, off Ikorodu Road. Search-and-rescue operations were continuing as emergency teams checked whether other construction workers remained beneath the rubble.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency said the three rescued men received emergency medical care before being taken to hospital. Channels Television reported that three people were injured.
LASEMA Permanent Secretary Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu said the agency received a distress call at 12:10 a.m. and deployed its Cobra Response Team from Onipanu. The team arrived at 12:12 a.m., according to his statement, reported by Vanguard and Daily Trust.
Oke-Osanyintolu said responders heard groaning beneath the debris during the operation. An excavator was deployed to help remove the wreckage and reach people who might still be trapped. The agency had not established how many people remained beneath the collapsed structure.
The emergency response involved LASEMA paramedics, the Lagos State Ambulance Service, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and police officers.
The cause of the collapse had not been determined. Oke-Osanyintolu said the relevant regulatory agencies would investigate the circumstances.
