Tunji-Ojo Says Nigeria’s Land Borders Are Not Closed, Replies Atiku

Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has rejected Atiku Abubakar’s promise to reopen Nigeria’s land borders, saying the borders are already open and cannot be reopened.
Tunji-Ojo said the Nigeria Immigration Service, which is under his ministry, handles border and migration management, and that Nigeria’s land borders with neighbouring countries are not shut.
Atiku had promised, during political engagements, to reopen all closed land borders if elected president in 2027. He argued that restrictions on routes linking Nigeria with Benin Republic, Cameroon, Chad and Niger had hurt cross-border trade, raised food prices and pushed traders into harder conditions.
The minister said the former vice president’s comment created a false impression about the current border position. The reports framed the exchange as part of the wider political argument over trade, security and the cost of living before the 2027 elections.
