Rescued students from the Federal Polytechnic, Monguno, after the attempted abduction in Borno

Troops and police officers have rescued 46 students after suspected ISWAP fighters tried to abduct them from the Federal Government Girls College in Monguno, Borno State.

The school is being used by the Borno State Government as temporary hostel accommodation for students of the Federal Polytechnic, Monguno. The attack happened around 1:30 a.m. on July 19, according to Operation Hadin Kai.

The military said the attackers gained access to the facility with help from suspected collaborators, but security personnel engaged them and a Sector 3 Quick Reaction Force reinforced the school.

The fighters fled without taking any student. Parts of the school were damaged during the exchange of gunfire.

All 46 students were evacuated to Kinnasara Barracks in Monguno for medical checks. The military said they were stable and no student was killed or injured.

Operation Hadin Kai said calm had been restored around the area and that troops were tracking the fleeing attackers and suspected collaborators.
