Tinubu Renames Kaduna Petroleum Institute After Shehu Musa Yar’Adua
President Bola Tinubu has approved the renaming of the completed Institute of Petroleum Studies in Kaduna after the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua.
Punch reported that Tinubu announced the decision during his Democracy Day address, saying the institution will be revitalised and renamed the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology.
The President said the move was part of the recognition due to figures who contributed to Nigeria’s democratic journey. Yar’Adua, a former military officer and political figure, is widely remembered for his role in the country’s transition politics and for building a national political network before his death.
Premium Times also carried the development, confirming that Tinubu named the new institution after Yar’Adua as part of the Democracy Day announcements. The decision gives the Kaduna institute a broader public identity while tying its mission in geological sciences and engineering technology to a prominent national figure.
The renaming came alongside other Democracy Day honours and recognitions for Nigerians associated with the struggle against military rule. However, the Kaduna institute decision stands out because it is a concrete institutional action rather than a general ceremonial tribute.
For northern Nigeria, the move may also carry symbolic weight because Yar’Adua remains an important name in the region’s political history. For the education and energy sectors, the new university name suggests a continued federal focus on training and technical capacity linked to petroleum, geology, and engineering.
