Tinubu Orders Reform Of Nigeria’s Football System After Tournament Failures
President Bola Tinubu has ordered a broad reform of Nigeria’s football system after repeated failures to qualify for major regional, continental and global tournaments.
The directive puts the National Sports Commission, the Nigeria Football Federation and other football stakeholders under pressure to review how the game is governed, funded and developed across the country.
The reports said Tinubu gave the order through a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. The reform is expected to cover football governance, stakeholder representation, development pathways, domestic competitions and accountability.
Tinubu said Nigerian football has continued to struggle because of structural problems, despite the country’s talent, public support and national passion for the sport.
He also directed the authorities to engage FIFA and the Confederation of African Football during the process, while protecting Nigeria’s obligations under the international football framework.
The president asked football stakeholders and Nigerians to support the consultation, saying the country needs stronger institutions if its football results are to match its available talent.
