Tinubu Orders 500 More CNG Stations, Targets Cheaper Transport Fares

President Bola Tinubu has ordered the rollout of 500 more compressed natural gas refuelling stations across Nigeria, with the federal government saying cheaper fuel should translate into lower transport fares from October 1.

The new directive would take the planned national CNG refuelling network to 1,000 stations. Tinubu gave the order after a meeting with state governors, who he said had agreed to push transport-cost reductions in their states through cheaper energy options, including CNG and electric vehicles.

The president said a vehicle running on CNG spends about 60 to 80 per cent less on fuel than one running on petrol. He said the federal government and states would work through a joint committee to make sure commuters benefit from those savings.

The expansion comes under the Presidential CNG Initiative, which the government has promoted as one of its main responses to higher transport costs after petrol subsidy removal. More than 120,000 vehicles have been converted to CNG nationwide, while over 100,000 more conversion kits are being processed.

Tinubu also said the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund is financing more than 100 gas projects across the country. The government says the refuelling network, conversion centres and cheaper fuel are meant to support wider adoption of CNG-powered transport.
