The Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles says fares have fallen by 15 to 50 per cent on some routes participating in its transport programme.
The initiative reported 670 CNG buses deployed nationwide, including 285 operating commercially across 13 states and 302 allocated to transport unions, students and government agencies.
The figures were presented at a media engagement in Kano on Thursday, organised by the Decade of Gas Secretariat with the initiative, Punch reported. The presentation did not identify the routes with lower fares or give examples of previous and current charges.
Punch also reported that the presentation did not clarify the status of the remaining 83 buses or whether the commercial-operation and allocation categories overlapped.
The initiative said it had deployed 25 additional buses in Kano. It reported seven CNG refuelling stations operating in the state and 17 more at various stages of completion.
Nationally, it said plans were underway for 127 additional refuelling stations across 31 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Hundreds of additional CNG buses and tricycles were also on order, according to the initiative.
In an earlier report here, Ekiti rolled out 15 federally donated CNG buses with a stated target of cutting fares by 50 per cent.
The initiative’s Chief Operating Officer, Tosin Coker, urged vehicle owners to use certified conversion centres and approved equipment, and to maintain their vehicles properly.
